Definition of philanthropy 

Goodwill to fellow members of the human race especially : active effort to promote human welfare.

 

Charity focuses on eliminating the suffering caused by social problems, but philanthropy focuses on eliminating the problems in the first place. These philanthropic organizations are effecting positive changes not only for those they serve, but also within society. Being philanthropic is having a genuine concern for human welfare and advancement.

Vogel Alcove

Vogel Alcove provides the youngest children of homeless families with the foundation for success. Approximately 3,000 children in Dallas go to sleep each night without a home of their own. The organization is on a mission to help young children overcome the lasting and traumatic effects of homelessness. They envision a world where every child has a home, a self-sufficient family and a foundation for success in school and life.

Operation Kindness

Operation Kindness is the original and largest no-kill animal shelter in North Texas. Since 1976, the organization has saved the lives of nearly 100,000 homeless animals. Operation Kindness is the “go to” facility for 47 municipal shelters and rescue groups who have run out of space or have animals in need of medical services. The community relies on Operation Kindness to save lives.

The Elisa Project

The Elisa Project (TEP) is dedicated to fighting against eating disorders through education, support and advocacy. The program serves women, men, adolescents and children of all ages. The Elisa Project increases community awareness, promotes recognition of the warning signs, encourages treatment, and provides objective information regarding the availability of appropriate professional services. Recovery from an eating disorder is possible and that no one should have to suffer or recover alone.

Best Buddies International

Best Buddies International is the world’s largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The program has established a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with IDD. The organization serves people with Down syndrome, autism, Fragile X, Williams syndrome, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury and other undiagnosed disabilities.

Costa Rican Humanitarian Foundation

The Costa Rican Humanitarian Foundation (CRHF) is a non-profit organization committed to developing creative and economical solutions to a wide range of social problems in Costa Rica. The CRHF provides opportunities to exchange friendship, goods, services, and financial resources for critical needs among different cultures, socio-economic classes, and language groups. Based in the rural community of Santa Ana, Costa Rica, CRHF works to improve the quality of life of the most vulnerable populations in Costa Rica. The Foundation now manages more than fifty volunteer projects throughout the country, focusing on education, community development, primary and preventive health care, and extensive support services for women, at-risk youth and indigenous groups. All needs that the CHRF addresses are defined by the local populations, thus ensuring a high level of commitment to each of our programs.
